IAN
has just entered the Group Therapy room and is watching Dan trying to get the
courage to talk to him.
IAN
(to himself)
You’re
finally in, Ian. What are you waiting
for? Go talk to him.
Ian
walks over to Dan.
IAN
Hi.
DAN
Hello.
IAN
I’m
Ian.
DAN
Hey. Uh, is there something you wanted?
IAN
No,
not really. Just to say hello.
DAN
You sort of look familiar to me. Do I know you?
IAN
Oh,
uh, no. You probably recognize me from
seeing me here at the hospital.
DAN
Yeah,
I guess.
IAN
Well,
I didn’t mean to bother you. I’ll see
you around.
DAN
Okay. Later man.
PAUL
has just been interrupted on his way out by an unexpected visit from BARBARA.
PAUL
Barbara,
I said all I have to say to you at our sham of a wedding.
BARBARA
Well,
I haven’t said anything that I want to say.
I need to explain to you what happened.
I may have done a million things wrong, but I loved you, Paul, and I still do. My life has not been easy but I’ve worked
hard to overcome all that and I don’t want one tiny mistake to ruin everything.
PAUL
Do
you want me to hire a violinist for this little speech? Why don’t you come back in a few hours and
I’ll see if I can arrange it.
BARBARA
This
is no joke, Paul. You and I were good
together. Don’t tell me you didn’t think
so too.
PAUL
Barbara,
just in case I didn’t make it clear on our wedding
day. I will never, I repeat never, take you back. You were screwing around with my son’s best
friend, practically a child, while you were sleeping in my bed. The whole incident makes me sick. Your face makes me sick. So why don’t you do us both a favor, and get
the hell out of my office. (beat) Now, I have some place to be. Goodbye.
Paul
quickly walks out.
DANTE
is talking with ASHLEY who has just arrived.
DANTE
Look,
it’s not that I don’t trust
ASHLEY
How
can you be so sure? Elijah and Arden
both needed a new place to live.
DANTE
I
wasn’t born yesterday, Ashley. He thinks
he’s being clever but I’m on to him.
ASHLEY
But
what can you do?
DANTE
I
don’t know what I can do, other than deal with it. I hate it that he has the upper hand right
now.
ASHLEY
Dante,
I’m glad you can trust me enough to talk to me. I’m happy we’ve become such good friends.
DANTE
So am I, Ashley.
Paul
walks in.
PAUL
Hello
son. Ashley.
ASHLEY
Hi.
DANTE
What’s
up, Dad? Looking for some mail?
PAUL
No. I need to talk to you, Dante. Alone, if you don’t mind.
ASHLEY
Oh,
uh, sure. I was just leaving
anyway. Dante, I’ll see you soon.
DANTE
Thanks,
Ashley.
Ashley
leaves.
DANTE
Gee,
Dad, that was kind of rude. You chased
Ashley right out of here.
PAUL
Good. I want you to stay away from that girl, son.
DANTE
You
have a problem with Ashley? Why?
PAUL
I
have my reasons.
DANTE
Is
it because her father is Dan Levin?
PAUL
You
know about that?
DANTE
Yes. So doesn’t that make us practically cousins?
PAUL
I
suppose. But I have a feeling she wants
to be a kissing cousin, and you can’t go there.
Do you understand?
DANTE
Dad,
I’m with
PAUL
Just
do as I ask, son. Trust me.
ANGELA
and BRIAN have just arrived home from long days at the hospital.
ANGELA
It
is so good to be home. I had wall to
wall patients today.
BRIAN
Tomorrow
is my day off so I can finally sleep in for once.
ANGELA
I
notice you’ve been tossing and turning the past few nights. Have you been thinking about your father?
BRIAN
Well,
it’s hard not to. I told
ANGELA
I’m
not sure how I’d feel if I found out I had another sibling out there somewhere.
BRIAN
I
don’t even know what to make of that.
For all I know, Dad made that up when he was talking to Aunt
Barbara. He always was a pathological
liar.
ANGELA
How
did you mother take it when he left?
BRIAN
Not
well. But it’s been so long, I can hardly
even remember a time when she wasn’t bringing a string of men into the house,
looking for a replacement. I’m just glad
she’ll be leaving
ANGELA
She’s
leaving? I didn’t know that.
BRIAN
Well,
They
hear a knock on the door.
ANGELA
I’ll
get it.
Angela
walks over to the door and opens it and sees Eve.
ANGELA
Mrs.
Morgan. We were just talking about you.
EVE
Hello,
Angela.
Eve
walks in and over to Brian.
BRIAN
(sarcastically)
Come
on in, Mom.
EVE
Brian,
Paul Ramos (ray-mos) has booted me off his
premises. I’m homeless.
BRIAN
Mom,
you’re always so dramatic. There’s a
hotel right down the street that I’m sure has vacancies.
EVE
A hotel. I can’t stay at a
hotel. I need you to put me up for the
night.
