MANNY
is talking with BARBARA in the living room.
BARBARA
Manny,
I just want to thank you again for giving me a safe place to stay the past few
days.
MANNY
Look,
it’s no big deal, really.
BARBARA
Well,
it is to me. You gave me a ride from the
church back to Paul’s and then brought me here.
You showed me kindness that I probably didn’t deserve and certainly
didn’t expect.
MANNY
Hey,
you pissed off Paul in a big way. If I didn’t
like you before, I certainly do now.
BARBARA
Oh,
come on. You said you were trying to
make peace with Paul.
MANNY
Barbara,
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but once you get on Paul’s bad side, you
usually end up staying there, permanently.
BARBARA
Great. But you know what, I have
a feeling things might work out differently for me. Once Paul has some time to cool down…
MANNY
Look,
I’m not trying to put a damper on your hopes here, but I’m going to be honest
with you. You’ve been seeing the softer
side of Paul, one that not many people ever see in their lifetime. But the look on his face at your wedding,
that’s the look of the Paul that I know and have to deal with. I hope you know what you’re in for.
BARBARA
I
did the crime, now I have to do the time.
But it’s not as bad as Paul thinks.
I had something going on with Damien when Paul and I were first
together, but it’s been over for a very long time.
MANNY
I
just can’t see you with Damien Givens.
BARBARA
I
know. I don’t know what I was
thinking. He was way too young, for
sure, but he gave me something that I really needed at a low point in my
life. I knew I was leading him on the
whole time, but it was so nice to have someone treat me with so much love and
respect. He’s a good kid.
MANNY
He
almost was my brother-in-law.
BARBARA
That’s
right. Whatever happened between you and
Angela anyway?
MANNY
Oh,
that’s a long, long story, Barbara.
BARBARA
Well,
it’s not like I have a plane to catch or anything. Tell me all about it.
CAROLINE
Hello
you two.
ELIJAH
Caroline. Hello.
Hi, Mrs. Morgan.
EVE
Hello
Elijah.
Are
you guys on a business lunch?
CAROLINE
I
had an appointment in Suffern and Eve came along to take notes. Should we just grab a table anywhere?
Yeah,
any open table is fine. I have to go
pick up an order, but I’ll be with you in a minute.
CAROLINE
Okay,
no problem.
EVE
Caroline,
why don’t you go get us a table. I would like to have a word with Elijah if
you don’t mind.
CAROLINE
Sure.
Caroline
walks away.
ELIJAH
You
wanted to talk to me, Mrs. Morgan?
EVE
Yes,
Elijah. I noticed you looking at my
daughter when I first walked in today.
ELIJAH
We
were talking. Is there a problem?
EVE
Well,
actually, there is. This isn’t the first
time I’ve caught you gazing into my daughter’s eyes. I first noticed it at Thanksgiving. You have a thing for her, don’t you?
ELIJAH
She’s
a nice girl.
EVE
That’s
not what I asked.
ELIJAH
Look,
Arden and I are just friends. Good
friends I hope.
EVE
That’s
good. Because
ELIJAH
I’m
not sure I understand.
EVE
Look,
Elijah, I’m sure you’re a good kid and all.
But let’s face it, you’re the son of the Ramos
estate housekeeper. What kind of future
would my daughter have if she was with someone like you?
ELIJAH
Mrs.
Morgan, it’s not where you start in life, it’s what you do. I have a bright future ahead of me.
EVE
That’s
nice. But Dante is going to inherit a
fortune someday and will be able to provide
ELIJAH
I
hear you loud and clear. But you hear
this. I may be the housekeeper’s son
right now. But I’m going to be somebody
someday. Somebody
important. You better remember
that.
