PAUL
is sitting in his study talking with MIRANDA who has just threatened to tell
Dante he is adopted.
PAUL
Miranda,
how in the hell did you know about Dante?
MIRANDA
Oh,
Paul, sometimes you were so anxious to hit the sack with Barbara that you would
run out of your study without locking up all your desk drawers.
PAUL
You
went through my personal papers?
MIRANDA
Don’t
act so shocked. And no, I didn’t rummage
through your desk, the papers in question practically found me.
PAUL
Miranda,
Dante does not know he’s adopted and I never want him to find out.
MIRANDA
That’s
what I figured. And
his real father? Who would have
known? How did that happened?
PAUL
What
do you want to keep quiet?
MIRANDA
All
I want is to keep my job, no six week sabbatical, no time off at all.
PAUL
That’s
it?
MIRANDA
Yes. For now. Can you give me that much? After twenty years of service and loyalty?
PAUL
Fine. But this is a very serious
matter, Miranda. You’d better not
breathe a word of this to anyone. Do we
understand each other?
MIRANDA
Of course, Paul. I think we finally do for
the very first time.
CAROLINE
has just arrived at MANNY’S apartment and knocks on the door.
CAROLINE
(to herself)
I
hear the TV. He must be at home.
Caroline
knocks again and suddenly Manny opens the door slightly acting a bit
mysterious.
MANNY
Yes. Oh, hi Caroline.
CAROLINE
Manny, hi. I haven’t heard from you
in a few days so I thought I would stop by and see how you’re doing.
MANNY
I’m
great, thanks.
CAROLINE
So
are you going to let me in or are we going to have this conversation with me
standing in the hallway?
MANNY
Look,
Caroline. I’m afraid you’ve caught me at
a bad time. I’m actually in the middle of
something here. I’m sorry.
CAROLINE
Oh. I see.
Well, uh, I guess I’ll be seeing you then.
MANNY
Definitely. I’ll give you a call
tomorrow for sure.
CAROLINE
Alright. Bye Manny.
MANNY
Bye.
Manny
shuts the door in her face.
