BENNY
has just arrived to see BARBARA.
BARBARA
Benny,
what the hell are you doing here? It’s bad enough you’re working at L&R.
BENNY
Barbie,
you’re gonna thank me when you find out why I’m here.
BARBARA
Oh,
I seriously doubt that. What do you
want?
BENNY
I
was debating on whether to tell you this or not, but since I am working for
your fiancé’s company, and doing quite well, I thought I’d do you a favor.
BARBARA
First,
I hope you’re not up to anything shady, Benny, because if you cross, Paul…
BENNY
Hey,
I’ve gone legit, Barbie. Can’t a man
change?
BARBARA
Not
you. And second, I don’t need any favors
from you.
BENNY
Alright. I won’t tell you about
Paul’s plans for your brother, Frank.
BARBARA
Frank! What do you know, Benny?
BENNY
Paul’s
looking for Frank to surprise you for your wedding. I don’t think he’s found him yet, but I know
you lied to Paul about giving Frank a large sum of cash recently, so I’m pretty
sure you don’t want him found.
BARBARA
How
do you know about the money?
BENNY
I
have my ways. But that’s not the
point. The point is that your brother
has a parole hearing tomorrow and if things go well, he’s going to walk out of
prison and more than likely be a guest at your wedding.
BARBARA
Frank
is in prison? How do you know this?
BENNY
Well,
since I’ve reformed and all, I might as well tell you that old Frankie wrote
you a letter several years ago from jail that I happened to accidentally open
and read.
BARBARA
Frank
wrote me a letter and you intercepted it?
BENNY
I
was sparing you the ugly truth that your brother was a criminal.
BARBARA
Oh
my God. What’s he in for?
BENNY
A
few things, but he may walk tomorrow so if you don’t want that to happen you
might want to show up at that parole hearing and make sure his sister lets it be
known that he hasn’t changed and shouldn’t be walking the streets.
BARBARA
I
haven’t seen my brother in years, thanks to you, and now you want me to try to
keep him in prison.
BENNY
You
don’t want Paul to find out you’ve been lying right before your wedding, do
you? It may not be the most ethical
thing to do, but you’ve done worse to save your hide before. (beat) Look, that’s
all I came to say. Do what you want with
the information.
BARBARA
Just
get out of here, Benny. You’re loving all this, aren’t you. God, I hate you with a passion.
BENNY
You
know, Barbie, sometimes you protest just a little too much with me. I have to wonder if some of those old
feelings are still there under the surface.
BARBARA
Get
a grip, Benny. I feel nothing for you but
disgust and anger and full on hatred.
You got that?
ANGELA
is having a session with DAN.
ANGELA
Dan,
tell me about the nightmares you’ve been having.
DAN
Well,
they all take place in the Ramos estate.
Paul is there. And he’s not
happy.
ANGELA
Is
anyone else there or is it just the two of you?
DAN
I
hear a voice calling for me, and I go upstairs.
It’s Julia.
ANGELA
Paul’s late wife, Julia?
DAN
Yes. She has to tell me something.
ANGELA
What
does she tell you?
DAN
I
don’t know. The next thing I remember is
being angry and running out of the house.
ANGELA
Dan,
this nightmare of yours sounds a lot like what really happened the night Julia
Ramos died.
DAN
I
know. And I’ve never been able to
remember everything that happened that night.
ANGELA
I’ve
suggested this before and you’ve been resistant. Would you let me put you under hypnosis to
try and remember more about what happened with Julia?
DAN
I
don’t want to remember it, doc. I just
wish I wasn’t having nightmares about it.
DANTE
is sorting through the mail when PAUL walks in.
PAUL
Hello
son. How are things in the mail room?
DANTE
How
do you think, Dad? I already have three
paper cuts.
PAUL
(laughs)
It’s
good for you son. You’re going to learn
this business from the ground floor up.
DANTE
It’s
a construction business, Dad. You build
houses and tall buildings. What else am
I supposed to know?
PAUL
That
attitude proves to me just how little you learned in those business classes of
yours.
DANTE
I
don’t need any classes. I want to learn
by experiencing things, and I don’t mean sorting through the mail.
PAUL
Dante,
a little hard work never hurt anyone. My
father took this same approach for me, and it worked out quite well if I may
say so myself.
Arden
and Ashley walk in.
Hi, Dante. Hello Mr. Ramos. (ray-mos)
DANTE
Arden, Ashley, hi.
PAUL
Hello
Arden, whose your friend?
This
is Ashley Thompson. We work together at
Sutter’s Mill.
PAUL
Ashley,
it’s nice to meet you.
ASHLEY
You too, Mr. Ramos.
PAUL
Well,
I’m going to leave you all alone to chat.
But don’t stay too long, Dante has a lot of work to do.
Paul
walks out.
Wow,
so this is it?
DANTE
It
was lose my trust fund or work here in the mail room. Fun choice.
ASHLEY
It
beats waiting tables at Sutter’s Mill.
Does your family really own this whole place?
DANTE
Yep. My grandfather started this business and then
my Dad took it over.
ASHLEY
Very impressive. I’d sure love to be in
your shoes.
DANTE
Oh
yeah? You want a stack of mail to work
on?
ASHLEY
No,
I mean you’re basically set for life.
This job isn’t bad, and you get to life in that big house and drive a
nice car.
DANTE
I
know I’m lucky, but sometimes I think I might have been better off if I hadn’t
been given so much growing up.
ASHLEY
Don’t
say that. Just count your lucky stars.
Ashley’s
right. This place isn’t so bad. Just hang in there, Dante. Things will get better.
IAN
is at the nurse’s station talking with CAROLINE.
CAROLINE
Have
you had any luck finding out more about your father?
IAN
Not
really. Paul Ramos wasn’t much help, and
my sister isn’t interested. It’s so
frustrating because he’s just down the hall from here and I can’t see him.
CAROLINE
You
have to be patient, Ian. I know that’s
hard, but for some reason I feel like things just might work out for you.
IAN
I
hope you’re right.
Angela
and Brian walk up.
ANGELA
Hi, Caroline. It looks like the two of
you were deep in conversation. Do you
know each other?
CAROLINE
Angela, Brian, hi. Uh, I met Ian while I was
here visiting Dan.
IAN
Yeah,
we didn’t know each other before.
ANGELA
(confused and a bit suspicious)
Um,
okay.
BRIAN
(to Ian)
I
don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Brian.
IAN
Hi,
I’m Ian.
ANGELA
Ian
is our newest intern here at the psych center.
BRIAN
Nice. I may be seeing you more often as I just
took a job with the Rockland Hospital Burn Unit.
CAROLINE
Oh
great, congratulations.
BRIAN
I
think it will be a good move for me.
I’ll be closer to Angela and Arden.
The only bad part will be living closer to my mother.
CAROLINE
Speaking
of Eve, it looks like she’ll be staying on as my admin for at least a few more
weeks.
ANGELA
How
is that working out for you, Caroline?
CAROLINE
Well,
she’s definitely a one of a kind person.
She kind of spices up the office a bit.
BRIAN
Oh,
I’m sure she does.
