MANNY
is sitting in the third floor waiting room when ANGELA runs up.
ANGELA
Manny,
I got your message. What happened to
Karen?
MANNY
Ang, Karen tried to kill herself.
ANGELA
What?!!
MANNY
I
found her in her apartment passed out with an open bottle of sleeping pills
beside her. I called 9-1-1 and they
brought her here to pump her stomach.
She still hasn’t woken up as far as I know.
ANGELA
Oh
my God. I can’t believe she would do
this.
MANNY
I
guess Karen wasn’t in a very good state of mind, as we all suspected.
ANGELA
But
I never thought she’d go this far. Wait
a minute. What were you doing at Karen’s
apartment?
MANNY
Ang, remember that call I answered for you, the one I said was a
wrong number. It was Karen.
ANGELA
Karen
called and you didn’t tell me?
MANNY
She
sounded upset, but after everything that’s happened, I didn’t know if she was
just being overly dramatic, so I decided to check it out myself.
ANGELA
Manny,
she was reaching out for help. That’s
not the kind of thing you keep to yourself.
MANNY
I
didn’t want your night to be ruined. I
probably did the wrong thing, but I was trying to protect you.
ANGELA
Look,
none of that matters right now. I’m going to go find out what the hell is
going on with Karen.
CAROLINE
has just called EVE into her office.
EVE
You
wanted to see me, Caroline?
CAROLINE
Yes. Eve, I just got a call from Sarah, my regular
admin. Her doctor has ordered complete
bed rest for her, so she won’t be able to return to work as scheduled.
EVE
Oh.
Does that mean I’ll be sticking around?
CAROLINE
Well,
you have done an admirable job of filling in so I’m willing to keep you on and
see how it goes. Your experience doesn’t
totally match my requirements, but we’ll play it by ear for a while.
EVE
Look,
I’m doing the best I can here. I know
this is a temp job, but I do need some sort of stability. I’ve been actively seeking other jobs and if
something else comes along…
CAROLINE
If
something else comes along, then by all means take it. Let’s leave it at that.
EVE
Okay.
CAROLINE
So
how was your New Year’s?
EVE
Well,
knowing I had to come into work today put a serious damper on any partying I
might have done.
CAROLINE
Look,
I appreciate you working on New Year’s Day.
We’re so behind around here after the fire.
EVE
To
be honest, I’m pretty broke and need all the hours I can get.
CAROLINE
Eve,
I don’t mean to pry, but I do know a little of your history from my nephew,
Dante. It seems like this move to

I
don’t know about that. Dante really
loves
EVE
Ugh,
I do not like that girl at all. She’s
totally wrong for Brian.
CAROLINE
I’ve
known Angela a long time. She’s a good
person. Remember my friend Manny that
came by the other day? She was actually
engaged to him at one time.
EVE
Oh? And what happened?
CAROLINE
It’s
a long story. Basically they were just
torn apart by fate.
EVE
Hmmmm. Interesting.
ARDEN
and ASHLEY are working at the bar when ELIJAH walks up.
ELIJAH
Hello
ladies.
Elijah, hi. Have you met Ashley?
ELIJAH
I
think I’ve seen you around but we haven’t formally met. Elijah Phillips.
ASHLEY
Hi. It’s nice to meet you.
ELIJAH
How
was your New Year’s, Arden?
It
was nice. Dante and I went to a party at
one of his friend’s house. Damien was
there too.
ELIJAH
Ah.
What
about you? What did you do?
ELIJAH
Oh,
some guys in my apartment complex through a little bash. I’m still feeling the after effects
unfortunately.
ASHLEY
So
how do you two know each other?
Elijah’s
mother works at the Ramos estate.
ELIJAH
She’s
the housekeeper.
ASHLEY
I
see.
ELIJAH
Unfortunately
I’m not the heir to a family fortune like Dante Ramos.
Sorry,
Elijah, I have to go check my corner table.
They’re looking restless. Talk to
you in a bit.

No
problem.
ASHLEY
Did
I detect a little animosity in your voice when talking about Dante? Do you have a problem with
ELIJAH

Oh,
I get it. You think you are that guy and
not Dante.
ELIJAH
Don’t
go putting words in my mouth now.
Ian
walks up.
IAN
Hey.
ASHLEY
Ian,
what are you doing here?
IAN
Ash,
you’ve been working here two months.
This is the longest job you’ve held in your life. I had to stop by and see the place for
myself.
ASHLEY
Real funny.
ELIJAH
Hi,
I’m Elijah. Are you Ashley’s boyfriend?
IAN
Boyfriend?
ASHLEY
He’s
not my boyfriend, Elijah. He’s my
brother.
