INT. SUTTER’S MILL - NIGHT

ARDEN is at the bar talking with DANTE who just walked over from the table where he is having dinner with MANNY.

DANTE

Hey gorgeous.  I was wondering when your shift started.

ARDEN

Hi.

DANTE

I tried calling you earlier.

ARDEN

Yeah, I was out shopping in Piermont with your friend, Elijah.

DANTE

Elijah Phillips?  Arden, that guy is definitely not my friend.  What were you doing with him?

ARDEN

Well, he stopped by the guest house and was trying to be nice since I’m fairly new in town.  I’ve gotten the sense that there’s some tension between you two, but you haven’t talked about him much.

DANTE

That’s because the tension between us is all him.  I’ve known that guy my entire life and we’ve barely had a conversation.  He has some kind of problem with me, but I’ve never done a damn thing to him.

ARDEN

So why would he stop by the guest house and invite me to go shopping then?

DANTE

I have no idea, but stay away from that guy, Arden.  He has a chip on his shoulder a mile wide.  And whatever his motives, they were probably no good.

INT. ANGELA GIVENS HOUSE IN NYACK - NIGHT

ANGELA is talking with DAMIEN and BRIAN in the living room.

DAMIEN

Karen said that?

ANGELA

Yes.  She basically said I had to choose between Brian and her.  This whole situation is spiraling out of control.

BRIAN

Angela, I’m sorry I’ve put you in this position with your best friend.

ANGELA

Brian, you didn’t do anything.  This isn’t your fault.

BRIAN

Are you also still sure that Karen isn’t doing all this on purpose?

DAMIEN

Wait a minute, you think Karen is making all this up?  Why would she do something like that?

BRIAN

To keep Angela and me apart.

DAMIEN

But I don’t get it.  What would she get out of that?

BRIAN

The hell if I know.  Angela?

ANGELA

You guys, when we talked earlier, she seemed genuinely hurt that I didn’t believe her about Brian.   We’ve always been able to read each other so well.

BRIAN

Is there anyone else who could talk to her?  And maybe get a different perspective on all this?

ANGELA

I don’t know.  If I can’t read her, then I don’t think anyone else will be able to.

DAMIEN

Angela, why don’t you let me talk to her?

ANGELA

Well, you guys have always been close too.  I guess it couldn’t hurt.

DAMIEN

I’m curious about the whole situation myself, and there’s one thing that’s never been clear to any of us.  Who sent you those letters and then sent Karen that one letter?

BRIAN

That’s a good point.  Do you think this is connected somehow?

ANGELA

How would it be connected?

BRIAN

Angela, you didn’t see Karen that night at the hospital.  I’ve had this theory ever since then but didn’t want to tell you because I figured you’d get upset.

ANGELA

What kind of theory?

BRIAN

It’s just way too convenient that Karen received that letter after her dinner with me.  Now if I was the one writing them, that would be one explanation.  But since I’m not, the only other thing I can think of that makes sense is that Karen wrote that letter to herself.

ANGELA

WHAT?!  You can’t be serious, Brian.

BRIAN

Think about it, Angela.  She knew you were getting letters and she could have used that to try and frame me.

ANGELA

But her letter looked just like mine.  You think she copied the original sender?

BRIAN

No, Angela.  I don’t.  I think Karen was the original letter writer as well.  Karen was your secret admirer!

INT. SUTTER’S MILL - NIGHT

ARDEN is at the bar talking with new waitress ASHLEY.

ASHLEY

So Arden, that guy over there is your boyfriend?

ARDEN

Yes.  Dante Ramos.  He’s having dinner with his uncle.

ASHLEY

Ramos?  As in the family with that big mansion in Piermont?

ARDEN

Yep.  And believe it or not, I’m staying in the guest house right now, which is bigger than any house I’d ever been in until now.

ASHLEY

So you’re living at the Ramos estate but working as a waitress at Sutter’s Mill?  What gives?

ARDEN

Well, I’m just staying there as a favor from Dante.  But I want to earn enough money to get my own place, a studio or a one bedroom apartment.

ASHLEY

Girl, why would you give all that up to move into a studio?  You can’t be serious.

ARDEN

I want to make it on my own, Ashley.  Is that so hard to understand?

ASHLEY

From where I live in Monsey (pronounced mun-sey), Piermont looks pretty damn good.  I’m sure if you played your cards right you could stay there as long as you wanted.

Dante walks up.

DANTE

Hello ladies.  Arden, who’s your new friend?

ARDEN

Dante, this is Ashley.  She just started here recently.

ASHLEY

(coming on to him)

Hello there.  Arden has been telling me all about you.

DANTE

I hope that’s a good thing.

ASHLEY

Oh yes.  It most definitely is.
