INT. SUTTER’S MILL - NIGHT

CAROLINE is talking with DAMIEN at the bar when ANGELA walks up.

ANGELA

Hey.

DAMIEN

Hi, sis, what can I get you?

ANGELA

A less confusing life?

DAMIEN

Uh oh, that doesn’t sound too good.

CAROLINE

Hello, Angela.

ANGELA

Hi Caroline.  How are you?

CAROLINE

Oh, you know.  About the same.

DAMIEN

So what’s up, Angela?  Something happen with Brian?

ANGELA

Damien, do you remember who was working the other night when I had dinner with Karen and Brian?  I came in at the end of dinner and didn’t stay too long.  I know Arden was here.

DAMIEN

Uh, that was my night off.  I think Arden and Ashley were working.

ANGELA

Ashley.  Is that the new waitress?

DAMIEN

Yeah, why?

ANGELA

Well, get this.  Karen swears Brian was hitting on her all night before I showed up.  I was wondering if anyone would remember if anything unusual happened.  I can’t ask Arden.

CAROLINE

Having doubts about your new boyfriend, Angela?

ANGELA

No, of course not.

DAMIEN

How could Karen misconstrue the situation so badly?

ANGELA

That’s what I’d like to know.

Manny walks up.

MANNY

Hello everyone.

CAROLINE

Manny, hi.

MANNY

How’s everyone doing this evening?

CAROLINE

I’m good, long day at work, dealing with the insurance claims from the fire.

MANNY

So the whole thing was chalked up to faulty wiring?

CAROLINE

Apparently one of the sub-contractors we hired didn’t use the top of the line material that was called for on the spec.

MANNY

Wow.  And how are you, Ang?

ANGELA

Damien, I think I’m going to go.  I’m not really hungry anymore.

MANNY

Angela, you don’t have to leave just because I’m here.

CAROLINE

Hey, wait.  Manny, didn’t you say you saw Karen Grissom having dinner with Angela’s boyfriend the other night?

MANNY

Yes, why.

CAROLINE

Here’s your witness, Angela.  Why don’t you ask Manny what he saw?

MANNY

What do you mean?  What was there to see?  They were having dinner.

ANGELA

Ugh, I can’t believe I’m asking you this.  Manny, did you see Brian flirting with Karen or doing anything that might be misinterpreted as coming on to her?

MANNY

You think your boyfriend was coming on to your best friend in front a restaurant full of people?

ANGELA

No.  But Karen does.  Did you see anything or not?

MANNY

Honestly?  No.  As much as it pains me to say it, your Brian seems like a nice guy.

INT. ROCKLAND PSYCH CENTER - NIGHT

KAREN has just finished her shift and is about to leave the nurse’s station when BRIAN walks up.

BRIAN

Hello Karen.

KAREN

Brian, you startled me.

BRIAN

We need to talk.

KAREN

Oh?  Angela’s not here and I was just leaving.

BRIAN

I spoke with Angela earlier and she told me what you said about me coming on to your at Sutter’s Mill.

KAREN

Brian, maybe it was just some big misunderstanding.  Angela convinced me that I misinterpreted the whole thing.

BRIAN

But how can that be, Karen?  I didn’t say or do a single thing that would make you think I was anything other than a perfect gentleman.  So what gives?

KAREN

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

BRIAN

I’m trying to figure out how you could come to such a conclusion, and why you would tell Angela something so outrageous about me, when nothing could be further from the truth.

KAREN

Brian, I told you, we got our signals crossed, that’s all.

BRIAN

Is that all there is to it?

Karen sees Cyrus walking towards them from a distance.

KAREN

(distracted)

Uh, of course, Brian.  (realizes she needs Cyrus to witness something bad so yells out) SO LEAVE ME ALONE, BRIAN, OKAY?

BRIAN

Karen, why are you yelling?

KAREN

Why are you harassing me?  I told you I wasn’t interested when we had dinner.  How can you come on to me, when you’re dating my best friend!

Cyrus runs up.

CYRUS

What’s going on, here?  Leave her alone.

BRIAN

(stunned)

What the hell?  We were just talking.

CYRUS

I just saw the whole thing, buddy.  Take a hike.

KAREN

Cyrus, thank God you showed up when you did.

CYRUS

Should I call security?

KAREN

No, Brian is going.  Get out of here, Brian.

BRIAN

I don’t know what you’re trying to pull, Karen, but I think Angela needs to know her best friend has some serious issues.

Brian quickly walks away.

CYRUS

Are you alright, Karen?

KAREN

I’ll be fine, Cyrus.  But I need to go call, Angela, and tell her what happened.  I can’t believe she’s dating that creep.

CYRUS

Hey, I’ll talk to her too if you want.  That guy seemed like a real jerk.

KAREN

Believe me, he is.
