working in the kitchen when PAUL walks in.
PAUL
Something
smells good in here, Miranda.
MIRANDA
Since the
cook has the night off, I offered to make dinner. I hope you’ll like it.
PAUL
You know I
always like it whenever you make dinner.
MIRANDA
(blushing)
Thanks you.
PAUL
I’m glad I
ran into you. I have some terrific news
for you.
MIRANDA
Oh?
PAUL
I’ve asked Barbara
to marry me, and she said yes. Isn’t
that wonderful?
MIRANDA
(Disappointedly
trying to cover but not doing a good job of it)
Oh. Yes, Paul.
That’s just about the best news I’ve heard in a long time.
PAUL
I was hoping
you’d be thrilled. Barbara is the first
woman I’ve cared about this much since Julia.
I appreciate you making here feel so welcome here.
MIRANDA
I just want
you to be happy, Paul. That’s all I’ve
ever wanted.
PAUL
I know. You’re one in a million, Miranda. One in a million. Hey, look at the time,
I’m expecting a work call in the study.
I’ll talk to you later.
MIRANDA
Sure. Dinner at 7.
Paul walks
out of the kitchen.
MIRANDA
(to herself)
Engaged? He’s going to marry that witch?
CYRUS is talking
with KAREN at the nurse’s station.
CYRUS
Karen, is
something the matter? You’ve been
snapping at everyone today, if you don’t mind me saying.
KAREN
(snaps)
I’m not
snapping, Cyrus!! (calms
down) Look, I guess I’m a little on edge
today. It’s nothing.
CYRUS
Okay. But if you ever need to
talk.
KAREN
This isn’t
something I can talk about.
Ian walks up.
IAN
Hey
there. I’m looking for Karen Grissom.
KAREN
You’re
talking to her.
IAN
Hi, I’m
Ian. I’m starting my internship today.
KAREN
Oh yes. Hi Ian. Welcome to the

talking with MIRANDA in the kitchen.
MIRANDA
Can you
believe it? Paul is marrying that woman.
ELIJAH
Mom, Barbara
seems pretty cool to me.
MIRANDA
Ugh, my son
is being controlled by his hormones.
ELIJAH
It’s not
hormones, Mom, I just think she’s a nice lady.
MIRANDA
I just don’t
understand what Paul sees in her.
ELIJAH
Speaking of
Paul, there’s something we need to talk about.
MIRANDA
What about
him?
ELIJAH
It’s about
him and Caroline Hart, his former sister-in-law.
The doorbell
rings.
MIRANDA
Another
awful woman. Look, I have to get the door.
Miranda walks
to the front door and opens it and sees Dee and Caroline on the doorstep.
MIRANDA
Oh, hello.

Miranda.
CAROLINE
Hi Miranda,
we need to talk.
MIRANDA
Paul isn’t in
so you’ll have to come back later.
We’re not
here to talk to Paul.
MIRANDA
Then what do
you want?
CAROLINE
We’re looking
for your son, Miranda. Have you seen
Elijah?
