ELIJAH is
sitting at the bar talking to bartender DAMIEN who is talking to newly arrived
CYRUS when CAROLINE stomps up.
CAROLINE
Damien, Cyrus! I think they’re here.
DAMIEN
Who’s here?
CAROLINE
The
person who tried to run me over outside the hospital.
I just parked next to a blue car that I swear is the same one!
CYRUS
What?! Are you serious?
ELIJAH
Someone tried
to run over you?
CAROLINE
Yes. We have to call the police. Damien, my cell phone is dead,
can I use the phone here to call Dee Levin?
DAMIEN
Sure.
Damien puts
the phone on the bar top.
ELIJAH
Look, Damien,
I just remembered that I promised my mother to pick a few things up for her at
the super market. I have to take off.
DAMIEN
Alright.
Later, man.
ELIJAH
See ya.
Elijah
quickly leaves.
CYRUS
I should go
out there and take a look at that car.
DAMIEN
Cyrus, what
did you want to talk to me about? It
seemed serious.
CYRUS
Damien, it
can wait. It was nothing.
CAROLINE
PAUL is
working at his desk when BARBARA walks into this office.
BARBARA
Hi honey.
PAUL
Barbara,
what an unexpected surprise.
BARBARA
A good one I
hope.
PAUL
Of
course.
BARBARA
I was out
doing a little shopping and thought I’d stop in to say hello.
PAUL
Well, you’ve
definitely made my day. I hope you’re
not cleaning out the stores in Nyack with that credit card I gave you.
BARBARA
No, no, just
doing a little window shopping.
PAUL
You know I’m
only kidding, Barbara. I gave you that
card because I want you to have nice things.
I hope you know that you’ve come to mean the world to me.
BARBARA
I do know
that, Paul. And I feel the same way
about you.
PAUL
Good. Very soon I want us to have a serious talk
about our future.
BARBARA
Now that
sounds intriguing.
PAUL
Let’s just
say I’ve been doing a little shopping of my own, and I think you’ll be pleased.
BARBARA
Paul!
PAUL
But that’s
all I’m going to say. I want to wait
until the time is right.
BARBARA
You really
are making all my dreams come true, you know.
PAUL
I hope
so. The last couple of nights you’ve
been tossing and turning and I was wondering if something was on your
mind. Are you having nightmares?
BARBARA
Well,
Paul. There’s something that has been on
my mind that I wasn’t sure how to bring up with you.
PAUL
What is
it? You can tell me anything, Barbara.
BARBARA
It’s about my
brother. He’s having a rough time of
things right now and the bank is threatening to foreclose on his home. He’s desperate for a little cash to tide him
over until he’s back on his feet.
PAUL
Hmm, you’ve
only mentioned having a brother once to me, and I could have sworn you said the
two of you were estranged.
BARBARA
Well, yeah,
we were. But he got in touch with me
recently. And like I said, he’s really
desperate for some help. And I feel bad
because I don’t know how to help him. I
don’t really have any money in my savings account right now.
PAUL
Barbara, if
your brother needs help, then let’s help him. How much does he need?
BARBARA
Twenty
thousand dollars.
CAROLINE and
CYRUS have just returned from outside and are talking to DAMIEN at the bar.
CYRUS
Are you sure
it was parked beside you?
CAROLINE
Cyrus, do you
think I was making it up? The car was
there.
DAMIEN
But how can
you be sure it was the car that tried to hit you. You already said you didn’t see it clearly.
CAROLINE
I know, but
when I saw this car, I had a flashback to that day, and it came back to me
more.
DAMIEN
What kind of
car was it?
CAROLINE
It was a
Mercury Marquis. LS I think. I thought I was going to come right back out
there. I should have written down the
license plate number.
CYRUS
Well, at
least it’s a start. You know the make
and model so you can probably look at some pictures and identify the exact car.
CAROLINE
You’re
right. And Dee Levin will hopefully be
able to trace this car to the man who tried to kill me.
