ROCKLAND COUNTY – EPISODE #18 – JULY 22, 2005 “LOVESICK FOOL”

WRITTEN BY ROGER NEWCOMB

INT. SUTTER’S MILL - DAY

CYRUS is sitting on a bar stool talking to DAMIEN who is working behind the bar.

DAMIEN

So Cyrus, how’s life over at the hospital?

CYRUS

Things are good.  Dr. Givens and Karen are really cool.  They’re the best part of the job.

DAMIEN

It seems like you really like working with my sister.

CYRUS

I do.  Everyone says she’s the best psychiatrist on staff.

DAMIEN

You know, Cyrus, you’ve been coming in here a lot lately after work and usually alone.   I keep expecting you to bring a date in one of these days.

CYRUS

Oh, I’m not dating anyone, Damien.

DAMIEN

Hey, I’ve been to the hospital, there are a lot of cute girls over there.

CYRUS

Yeah, I suppose.

DAMIEN

And I’m sure you have your eye on somebody, right?

CYRUS

Well, I do, you’re right.

DAMIEN

Is it anyone I know?

CYRUS

You could say that.   Damien, look…

Barbara walks up.

BARBARA

Damien, we need to talk.  Is there a place we can go to be alone?

DAMIEN

Sure.  Let’s go to the store room.  Cyrus, hold that though.

Barbara and Damien walk into the store room in the back.

DAMIEN

You’re sure a sight for sore eyes.  It seems like we haven’t been together in forever.  I’m really missing you, babe.

BARBARA

Damien, I’m sorry, but I can’t do this anymore.

DAMIEN

Can’t do what?  What are you talking about?

BARBARA

You and me.  It’s been fun and you’re a great guy, but I never should have started things back up with you again.  My life is getting way too complicated and I just can’t keep juggling all these balls I have in the air without something dropping.

DAMIEN

So I’m just a ball you were juggling that you’re dropping now?

BARBARA

I know it sounds cold, but I’ve thought long and hard about this, and I believe a clean break is best for both of us.

DAMIEN

Well, what about what I think, Barbara?  Or doesn’t that matter to you?

BARBARA

It does, Damien, but right now, with everything going on in my life, I have to focus on Paul.  I’m going to lose him if I’m not careful.

DAMIEN

So it all boils down to money, doesn’t it?  Paul Ramos has it and I’m just a lowly bartender.

BARBARA

You’re not a lowly anything, Damien, but you and I just won’t work long-term.  That’s a fact.  I’m sorry, but I have to go.

DAMIEN

Just like that?  It’s over?

BARBARA

It has to be.  Goodbye, Damien.

Barbara kisses Damien on the cheek and walks out of the store room.  A stunned Damien walks back out to the bar.

CYRUS

Hey, are you alright?

DAMIEN

No, I’m not.

Felicia walks up.

FELICIA

What was that all about, Damien?

DAMIEN

Felicia, what are you doing here?  How long have you been here?

FELICIA

Long enough to see you walk into the back with that red head and come out looking like you lost your best friend.   She’s the one, isn’t she?

DAMIEN

Not now, Felicia.  I’m not in the mood for you.

FELICIA

And she broke you heart.   You stupid, lovesick fool.  When are you ever going to learn?

INT. CAROLINE HART’S OFFICE AT ROCKLAND CONSTRUCTION - NIGHT

CAROLINE is talking with DETECTIVE DEE LEVIN who has just arrived.

CAROLINE

Thank you so much for stopping by so late, Dee. Is there any news you can give me about the accident?

DEE

I’m sorry to tell you this, Caroline, but since there is no evidence on the car that almost hit you and no witnesses, there is nothing that we can do at this point.

CAROLINE

Nothing you can do? I was almost killed! I may not be able to prove it was Paul Ramos, but I know he had a hand in it! I know he did!

DEE

Well, without concrete proof, we cannot move forward on the investigation.  Paul was my step-brother and I know he’s capable of a lot of things, but I can’t believe he would try to run over someone.

CAROLINE

(deep sigh)

Well, maybe you don’t know him as well as you think you do.

DEE

I’m sorry, Caroline.  For now, this case is closed.

CAROLINE

I suppose I’ll have to wait until next time when the car actually makes contact before Paul Ramos will be stopped.

DEE

I talked to Paul myself and I don’t think it was him, Caroline.  I know the two of you have a long standing grudge, but I have to go by the facts here, not emotions.

CAROLINE

Okay…fine.  So since you’re here, would you mind if we talk about your brother, Dan?

DEE

What about him?

CAROLINE

Dee, I have a feeling that Dan knows exactly what happened on the night that my sister was murdered. But, every time I bring up the subject, he gets agitated or stops talking completely. I know Dan will listen to you.  Please, please try to find a way to have him tell me anything he can about my sister’s death.

DEE

Caroline, we’ve talked about this before.  I know that you want to find out everything you can about Julia’s murder, but I’m going to tell you something and I’m only going to say this once, so pay attention. Stay away from my brother, you understand?  Dan thinks you are his friend and you’re only trying to use him to get information against Paul Ramos.

CAROLINE

Dee, that’s not true.  I care about Dan.

DEE

Do you?  Look, if I find out that you are harassing Dan for information about your sister, I will make sure that you will not be able to visit him ever again! Do I make myself clear?

CAROLINE

(sighs)

Yes…… I understand.
