BARBARA is talking
to MIRANDA in the family room.
BARBARA
Miranda.
Can you get me a cup of tea? My
throat is just so dry.
MIRANDA
Sure.
BARABARA
Don’t get too
excited about it?
MIRANDA
I’ll be right
back.
Miranda walks
away.
BARBARA
(to herself)
What is her problem?!
Paul and
Benny walk in.
PAUL
Hello
Barbara.
BARBARA
Paul. Benny!
What are the two of you doing together?
PAUL
I called
Benny and asked him to meet me here. I
talked to one of my directors about finding him a job at L&R and I think we’ve
come up with something.
BENNY
I was happy
to get your call, Paul. Tell me about
the job.
PAUL
We’re looking
for someone to help out in HR for the next few months. We’re hiring a lot of new contractors for the
summer season, and that whole department is swamped. I know it’s not the most glamorous gig in the
world, but…
BENNY
No, no. It sounds good. Like I said before, I’m willing to do
whatever it takes to make a little cash right now.
BARBARA
Benny, I’m
not sure this job matches your skill set.
Paul, it’s so sweet of you to offer, but I know Benny wouldn’t want to
accept a job he’s not nearly qualified to do.
BENNY
Barbie, you
probably don’t remember some of my other gigs over the years. I think I’ll fit right in over at
L&R. Paul, I accept. Thank you so much for giving me this chance.
PAUL
Hey, anything
for a friend of Barbara’s.
BENNY
I will do my
best to not let you down. Or Barbie.
BARBARA
Paul, would
you mind if I had a word with Benny alone for a minute?
PAUL
Not at
all. I need to make a call in the study. Benny, when can you start?
BENNY
How about
tomorrow?
PAUL
Perfect. Report to the HR department
at 9am.
BENNY
I’ll be
there.
PAUL
I’ll be in
the study if you need me.
Paul walks
out.
BARBARA
Ugh, I am
going to kill you.
BENNY
Hey, I’m just
trying to earn an honest dollar here.
BARBARA
Oh,
please. You are the most dishonest,
deceitful person I’ve ever met.
BENNY
Not counting yourself, right?
BARBARA
I swear,
Benny, if you cause any trouble at L&R or try to cause trouble for me, I will make your life a living hell.
BENNY
Oh, Barbie, I
love it when you get all tough with me.
But I don’t think you realize how low I’ve had to sink these past few
years. There’s not a damn thing you can
do to me to make my life any worse. I
guess that makes me a loose cannon, huh?
BARBARA
I mean it,
Benny. Paul Ramos is not a man you want
to mess with. He will chew you up and
spit you out.
Miranda walks
back in.
MIRANDA
Here’s your
tea, Ms. Whitman.
BARBARA
(annoyed by her presence)
Thanks.
MIRANDA
Sorry to
interrupt.
BARBARA
Fine.
So if you could leave us alone…
MIRANDA
I’ll be in
kitchen checking on dinner.
BARBARA
Okay,
whatever.
Miranda walks
out.
BENNY
Barbie,
that is no way to
treat the hired help.
BARBARA
Just
shut up, Benny. And get out of here before the “hired help”
hears us talking. The last thing I need
is that nosey housekeeper in my business.
CYRUS is
sitting on a bar stool talking to DAMIEN who is working behind the bar.
DAMIEN
So Cyrus,
how’s life over at the hospital?
CYRUS
Things are
good. Dr. Givens and Karen are really
cool. They’re the best part of the job.
DAMIEN
It seems like
you really like working with my sister.
CYRUS
I do. Everyone says she’s the best psychiatrist on
staff.
DAMIEN
You know,
Cyrus, you’ve been coming in here a lot lately after work and usually
alone. I keep expecting you to bring a
date in one of these days.
CYRUS
Oh, I’m not
dating anyone, Damien.
DAMIEN
Hey, I’ve been
to the hospital, there are a lot of cute girls over there.
CYRUS
Yeah, I
suppose.
DAMIEN
And I’m sure
you have your eye on somebody, right?
CYRUS
Well, I do,
you’re right.
DAMIEN
Is it anyone
I know?
CYRUS
You could say
that. Damien, look…
Barbara walks
up.
DAMIEN
Barbara! What are you doing here?
ANGELA has
just received a call from BRIAN.
ANGELA
Brian, I had a wonderful time tonight. Thanks for coming into Nyack to meet me. A relaxing dinner was just what I needed to
take my mind off things...............It’s nothing. No big deal............... So, when am I
going to see you again?............... Well, how about
this? Why don’t we meet at the hospital
tomorrow, and we can decide on the place...............
The phone suddenly cuts off.
ANGELA
Hello? Hello?!
Angela tries to dial Brian’s cell phone number again.
OPERATOR
We're sorry. You're call cannot be completed as
dialed. Please hang up and try again.
Angela hangs up.
ANGELA
Great.
Angela hears a noise outside her front door.
ANGELA
What was that?!
Angela walks to the front door and opens it.
ANGELA
Hello? Is anyone there? (silence)
There’s no one out there.
Angela looks down and sees a note on the porch.
ANGELA
What’s this?
Angela picks up the note and begins reading.
ANGELA
“My Dearest Angela. With every passing day, I
long to be with you more and more.
I know we can make all our dreams come true together. I ache for your body and soon I will have it. Love, Your Beloved.”
Angela quickly runs back inside and slams the door
shut.
ANGELA
(in a panic)
Oh, my god! Who
are you?! Who is sending me all these
letters?!
