ROCKLAND COUNTY – EPISODE #12 – JUNE 8, 2005 “OLD WOUNDS”

WRITTEN BY ROGER NEWCOMB

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NEW YORK

INT. DAMIEN’S APARTMENT - DAY

DAMIEN has just finished taking a shower when he hears a knock on the door.

DAMIEN

Oh dammit.

Damien puts a towel on and walks over to the front door and opens it.

FELICIA

Well, well, five o’clock and you’re naked.  I take it you have some tramp in your apartment.

DAMIEN

What are you doing here, Felicia?  And no, I’m home alone.

FELICIA

Rumor has it you’re seeing your mystery lady again.  I came over to find out if it’s true.

DAMIEN

It’s none of your damn, business.  You are the one who cheated on me, so don’t even get started with me today.

FELICIA

How do you do it?

DAMIEN

How do I do what?

FELICIA

How do you manage to keep this mystery woman of yours such a secret?

DAMIEN

Now why one earth would you think I have a mystery woman in the first place?

FELICIA

Get off it, Damien.  We both know that you would have taken me back once you got over it, if you hadn’t met someone.  And from what I hear, the two of you split up and now you’re seeing her again.  But no one seems to know who this woman is.  I can’t believe not one person knows about this.

DAMIEN

My personal life is no longer any of your concern.  And you’re wrong about me taking you back, Felicia.  You broke the trust and I was never going to forget it.  It doesn’t matter anyway, because we are all wrong for each other.

FELICIA

You think so?  Well, there’s something you’re forgetting about me, Damien.  I don’t like being rejected.   And if I can’t have you, then I don’t want anyone else to have you either.

DAMIEN

Come on, Felicia.  Just let it go.  We had some good times.  Let’s just leave it at that.

FELICIA

No!  There’s obviously some reason you don’t want anyone to know about this new lady friend of yours and I’m going to find out why.

INT. BURLINTON, VERMONT POLICE STATION - DAY

DANTE RAMOS and ARDEN MORGAN have arrived and ARDEN is about to go inside to visit her mother, EVE.

ARDEN

Well, this is it.

DANTE

Do you want me to come inside with you?

ARDEN

No.  That’s not necessary.  Look at her in there in that interrogation room.  She is totally oblivious about how much damage the long line of men she’s paraded in and out of her life has done to Brian and me.

DANTE

And your dad was Barbara’s brother?  What happened to him?

ARDEN

He was my mom’s great passion really.  When he left she fell apart and she’s never been the same.  Always looking for love in all the wrong places.

DANTE

She can’t be all bad if she’s willing to go to jail for something you did.

ARDEN

I guess it’s time to find out what happened after I left town.

DANTE

I’ll be right here if you need me.  I can see you through the glass and I’ll be in there so fast if you call for me.

ARDEN

You’re sweet, Dante.  I’ve never met anyone like you before.

DANTE

I feel the same way about you, Arden.

ARDEN

Okay, here goes.

DANTE

Good luck.

Arden opens the door and walks inside the interrogation room where Eve is sitting at a table and closes the door behind her.

EVE

Well, well.  I was wondering if you would ever show your face again.

ARDEN

Mom, I came as soon as I heard you confessed to killing Cliff.

EVE

Killing?!!  Honey, Cliff’s not dead.

ARDEN

What?!!  But Mom, I shot him.  And there was so much blood.

EVE

But not nearly enough.  He’s over at County Hospital recovering.  Will probably be released any day now.

ARDEN

Oh my God.  I thought I killed him.

EVE

What the hell happened, Arden?  How in God’s name did you get Cliff’s gun?

ARDEN

Mom, he came home angry and drunk and started attacking me.  I ran out of the house and before I knew it, I had taken the gun out of his truck.  We struggled and it went off.  I was so scared I just jumped into my car and drove off.

EVE

Leaving me holding the bag.

ARDEN

No.  I didn’t realize you were going to confess.  That never crossed my mind.  I just wanted to find Brian so I drove to New York.

EVE

Brian.  That ingrate son of mine?  What did you think he could do for that I couldn’t?

ARDEN

I don’t know.  I was scared and in shock.  I just had to get out of there.  But what I don’t understand is, why did you confess?  You didn’t shoot him, Mom.

EVE

When Cliff woke up after the shooting, the cops asked him who shot him.  He didn’t know, but said he thought there was a good chance it was me.  I told him I had no idea what happened at first, but when I first found Cliff, I picked up the gun.  They found my fingerprints on it, along with Cliff’s and a third person’s they couldn’t identify.  So they hauled me down here for questioning.

ARDEN

But that’s not enough evidence to put you in jail.  You didn’t have to tell them that YOU shot him.

EVE

I found your earring next to Cliff’s body Arden.  I knew it had to be you that shot him and left him there.  I took that earring and through it as far into the woods as I could while I waited for the ambulance to arrive.

ARDEN

So you confessed to shooting Cliff just to protect me?  No other reason?

EVE

He’s going to be getting out soon, Arden.  He doesn’t remember what happened.  If he knew you were the one who shot him, he’d come after you.

ARDEN

I was in shock at the time, but now I realize that it was self-defense Mom.  If I tell the police the truth, they will let you go.

EVE

And what’s going to happen to you?  Even if the police don’t arrest you, Cliff and his family will come after you.

ARDEN

I can’t believe you’re willing to go to jail to protect me.

EVE

Damn, Arden, what kind of horrible mother do you think I am?   Don’t answer that.

ARDEN

When this is all settled, Mom, I’m leaving Vermont and I’m not coming back.

EVE

Arden, you can’t leave here.  You’re all I got, kid.

ARDEN

I’m sorry, but I have to.  Brian is in New York City and I can stay with him until I find some place else to live.

EVE

So Brian talked you into this?  Just because he left here and never looked back doesn’t mean you should do the same.  He hasn’t been any kind of brother to you.  Or any kind of son for that matter.

ARDEN

Mom, you don’t realize what it’s been like for us, living here, watching you self-destruct.   As soon as one man walks out on you, have are bringing another one into our house.  I’m eighteen now, and I can’t take it anymore.

EVE

Oh, I see your gratitude lasted all of about two minutes.  Well, gee, Arden, thanks a hell of a lot.

ARDEN

Mom, I am grateful to you for trying to protect me against Cliff, but that doesn’t make up for a lifetime of men and drinking and pills.  I will never have any kind of life of my own if I stay in Vermont.  I’m sorry, but it’s true.

EVE

So while I’ve been here sitting in a jail cell for you, you’ve been off letting your brother turn you against me.

ARDEN

Don’t blame this on Brian, Mom.  I think New York is the best place for me now.  Brian is there, and so is Aunt Barbara.

EVE

Barbara!  Your father’s tramp of a gold-digging sister?!

ARDEN

Mom, I didn’t want this conversation to turn into some big fight.  I don’t want to leave things like that with you.

EVE

Well, it’s too late, kiddo.  You’ve shown your true colors today and I want you out of here, and out of my life.

ARDEN

Don’t do this.  I’m finally speaking my mind for the first time, and I should have known better I guess, but a part of me thought you might understand.

EVE

Trying living on bread and water a few days and see how understanding YOU are.  This is it, Arden.  You are no longer my daughter.

ARDEN

(upset)

Mom.

EVE

Just go.  Get the hell out of here.  When Cliff Myers comes looking for you, don’t come crawling back to me, you hear me?

ARDEN

Goodbye Mom.

Arden runs out starting to cry.

DANTE

Arden!  Are you alright?

ARDEN

No.  I’m not.

INT. SUTTER’S MILL - DAY

CAROLINE is having an early dinner with MANNY

MANNY

I can’t believe this.  You walk out of the hospital and almost get mowed down by an oncoming car?  What did the police say?

CAROLINE

They are looking for the car, but we didn’t exactly give them much to go on.  I don’t know if they’ll find out who it was.

MANNY

Caroline, you don’t think this person was trying to hit you on purpose, do you?

CAROLINE

I don’t know what to think, Manny.  The last time I was at the hospital, I had an ugly run in with Paul and he threatened me.

MANNY

Threatened you?  How?

A waitress walks up.

WAITRESS

Hi.  Can I get you another drink from the bar?

CAROLINE

No, I’m fine for now.

MANNY

I’ll have another soda, please.

WAITRESS

Sure.  I’ll be right back.

The waitress walks away.

CAROLINE

What happened to the Manny I used to know who would have whiskey with every meal?

MANNY

Just tell me how Paul threatened you.  What did he say, Caroline?

Caroline sees Cyrus and Karen walk in.

CAROLINE

Oh no.  There’s that psychic again.

MANNY

Oh, you mean the kid who told you that you were in danger.

CAROLINE

Yes, and he right.  I’d hate to find out what else he’s predicting for my life.  How totally creepy.

MANNY

Well, here he comes.

Cyrus and Karen walk up.

CYRUS

Hello, Ms. Hart.  How are you feeling today?

CAROLINE

I’m fine, Cyrus.

KAREN

That was quite a scare you gave us yesterday at the hospital.  Everyone is still talking about it.

MANNY

Hello Karen.

KAREN

Manny.

CYRUS

Well, didn’t mean to disturb you.  Have a nice day.

CAROLINE

Bye.

Karen and Cyrus walk away.

MANNY

So aren’t you the least bit curious?

CAROLINE

About what?

MANNY

About this guy?  The psychic intern or whatever he is.

CAROLINE

No.  I just want to forget about his freaky premonition and the fact that he was right.

MANNY

Maybe he knows who did this?  If he could see that you’re in danger, maybe he knows more.

CAROLINE

Oh, Manny, come on.  You don’t really believe in all that hooey now do you?

MANNY

Look, all I’m saying is, if I were you, I’d be finding out every detail that guy knows.  If the person who almost hit you did it on purpose, then there’s a good chance they’re going to try again.

INT. ST. JOHN HOSPITAL IN MANHATTAN - DAY

BRIAN has just finished showing ANGELA around the burn unit.

BRIAN

So what do you think of St. John?  How does it compare to the hospitals in Rockland?

ANGELA

Well, it has one thing that we definitely don’t have in Rockland.

BRIAN

And what’s that?

ANGELA

A hot, young burn specialist.

BRIAN

(laughs)

Hot?  Me?  Come on.

ANGELA

Oh please.  Don’t get modest on me now.  When we first me, you sent a picture of you wearing an extra small t-shirt, you were obviously wanting to impress me with your body.

BRIAN

Uh, not really.  That’s actually the only picture I have scanned.  Well, that and the same picture you see on my badge here, but that’s not exactly flattering.

ANGELA

Well, either way, it worked.  I was intrigued.

BRIAN

And I thought it was charm that won you over.

ANGELA

That too.

BRIAN

So do you have time to grab some coffee or do you have to get back to Rockland soon?

ANGELA

I have a little while.  Karen’s coming over later for a movie night.

BRIAN

Oh, that’ll be fun.

ANGELA

Yeah.  We both love romantic comedies so we’ll be all weepy during the movie and then happy at the end when the heroine and her hero finally get together.

BRIAN

That sounds nice.  The movie, I mean.

ANGELA

I always picture myself as the heroine in those movies.  I guess I’m a hopeless romantic at heart.  My brother, Damien, definitely is too.  Must run in our family.

BRIAN

That’s a good thing, right?

ANGELA

It would be, if I didn’t always get burned.  But like I said, I’m hopeless so I’ll just keep trying.

BRIAN

Oh, I don’t think you’re hopeless, Angela.  Not at all.

INT. PAUL’S OFFICE AT L&R CONSTRUCTION - DAY

BARBARA walks in and sees PAUL working at his desk talking to a man she can only see from behind.

BARBARA

Oh, sorry.  Margie said to go right in.  I didn’t mean to interrupt.

PAUL

You’re not interrupting, Barbara.  I was just talking to an old friend of yours.

BARABARA

Huh?

Benny turns around and faces Barbara.

BENNY

Hello Barbie.

BARBARA

(gasps)

Benny!

PAUL

Benny here has been filling me in on quite a few things I didn’t know about you Barbara.

BARBARA

Paul, I can explain!
